Redwood National Park: 4 Day Camping Trip from San Francisco

Redwood National Park: 4 Day Camping Trip from San Francisco
Walking into Fern Canyon felt like stepping straight into a movie scene — probably because it literally was. Picture this: towering moss-covered walls dripping with water, ferns hanging down like a living curtain, and a narrow trail with little wooden planks over the trickling stream. Every corner was so lush and wild I half-expected a dinosaur to pop out, but thankfully it was just me, a few hikers, and that unreal rainforest vibe.

Day 1 - Gold Bluffs Beach -> Elk Prairie

Begin with a scenic 6-hour drive from San Francisco, stopping in Eureka for a hearty lunch and supplies. Set up camp at Gold Bluffs Beach, just steps from crashing waves. Spend the afternoon strolling the wild, serene beach before heading to Elk Prairie at sunset for a magical chance to spot Roosevelt elk grazing in golden light.

Day 2 - Trillium Falls Trail -> Lady Bird Johnson Grove Trail -> Fern Canyon

After a relaxed oceanfront breakfast, hike the 2.6-mile Trillium Falls Trail for a serene escape with gentle cascades and lush ferns. Next, explore the fog-shrouded Lady Bird Johnson Grove, a redwood wonderland. After lunch, lose yourself in the surreal beauty of Fern Canyon, where moss-draped walls and trickling streams transport you to a rainforest dreamscape.

Day 3 - Trees of Mystery -> Yurok Loop Trail -> Stout Memorial Grove

Start the day with breathtaking views at High Bluff and Klamath River Overlooks, where rugged cliffs meet the vast Pacific. Visit Trees of Mystery and ride the SkyTrail gondola for treetop vistas. Stretch your legs on the 1.2-mile Yurok Loop Trail, then enjoy a scenic drive along Howland Hill Road, ending with a tranquil walk in Stout Memorial Grove amidst some of the tallest redwoods.

Day 4 - Tall Trees Grove Loop

Pack up and savor a final hike on the 4.5-mile secluded Tall Trees Grove Loop, a hidden gem reserved for permit holders, offering peaceful solitude among ancient giants.
