Glacier National Park: 7 Day Camping Adventure

Glacier National Park: 7 Day Camping Adventure
Sitting on the edge of Grinnell Glacier's turquoise meltwater, I traced the jagged ice with my eyes, knowing that in just a few years, this ancient glacier might be gone. Icebergs drifted lazily across the lake, cracking softly as they melted under the afternoon sun. I dipped my fingers into the freezing water, a fleeting connection to something that had existed for thousands of years but wouldn't last another decade.

Day 1 - Arrival in Kalispell (FCA) -> Many Glacier Campground

After landing at Glacier Park International Airport (FCA), stock up on supplies before embarking on a breathtaking 3-hour drive into the rugged heart of Glacier National Park. The route to Many Glacier winds past turquoise lakes, towering peaks, and endless alpine forests—setting the stage for an unforgettable adventure. Settle into camp and enjoy a peaceful first evening.

Day 2 - Going-to-the-Sun Road -> Hidden Lake Overlook -> Avalanche Lake Hike

Drive one of the most spectacular scenic highways in the world—Going-to-the-Sun Road. Start the day with the 2.8-mile Hidden Lake Overlook hike, where panoramic views stretch over beargrass-covered meadows and mountain goats often make an appearance. Later, wander beneath towering cedars to Avalanche Lake (4.6-mile round trip), a stunning glacial lake cradled by waterfalls and sheer cliffs. End the day with a sunset on the shores of Lake McDonald.

Day 3 - Grinnell Glacier Trail

After a scenic boat ride across Swiftcurrent and Josephine Lakes, tackle the 10.6-mile Grinnell Glacier Trail, where alpine meadows, aquamarine glacial lakes, and breathtaking views of the ice-covered Grinnell Glacier make every step worth it. Keep an eye out for bighorn sheep and grizzlies along the way before heading back to Many Glacier for an evening of relaxation.

Day 4 - Highline Trail

Hike Glacier's most famous trail, the 11.6-mile Highline Trail, where every step follows a narrow path along the Continental Divide with jaw-dropping views of the valley below. Traverse wildflower-filled slopes, pass through the dramatic Garden Wall, and spot mountain goats navigating the cliffs with ease. Descend via The Loop and catch a shuttle back to Logan Pass.

Day 5 - Scenic Point Trail -> Running Eagle Falls -> Two Medicine Lake Boat Tour

Venture into the lesser-visited Two Medicine Valley for a day of rugged beauty. Hike to Scenic Point (7.6-mile round trip), a challenging ascent that rewards you with sweeping views over the valley and even as far as the Great Plains. Afterward, visit Running Eagle Falls—a short, enchanting walk to a waterfall that mysteriously emerges from underground—before boarding a scenic boat tour across Two Medicine Lake.

Day 6 - Crypt Lake Trail -> Afternoon Tea at the Prince of Wales Hotel

Cross the border into Canada's Waterton Lakes National Park for the ultimate adventure—hiking the famous 10.7-mile Crypt Lake Trail. Take a boat shuttle across Upper Waterton Lake to the trailhead, then climb through waterfalls, a thrilling cliffside tunnel, and a ladder ascent to reach the stunning alpine lake. After the hike, treat yourself to a well-earned afternoon tea at the historic Prince of Wales Hotel, enjoying panoramic views of Waterton Valley.

Day 7 - Departure from FCA

After one last mountain sunrise, pack up and bid farewell to Glacier's pristine wilderness. Enjoy a scenic 3-hour drive back to the airport, reflecting on the raw beauty of the Crown of the Continent. Don't forget to share your photos and experiences with us to be featured on Voyagers' social media.
